IgG is a major effector molecule of the humoral immune response in man. There are four subclasses of IgG: IgG1, IgG2, IgG3 and IgG4, which are differentiated according to the differences in their structural and functional characteristics. A group of 681 children and adults (age range from 1 to 89 years; males: 324, females: 357) were examined for IgG subclass. The nephelometric quantification with monospecific anti-IgG subclass-specific antiserum was performed with the human IgG subclass and determined by the BN ProSpec system (all from Dade Behring, Marburg, Germany). The authors’ results suggest that the reference intervals of IgG subclass are age-dependent in children. The IgG subclass deficiency were as follows: sepsis (IgG2), diabetes mellitus (IgG1), systemic lupus erythematosus (IgG3 and IgG4), upper respiratory tract infection (IgG2), and autoimmune diseases (IgG2). In the mucoviscidosis group whit Pseudomonas aerginosa infection the levels of IgG2 and IgG3 were increased, while in the allergic patients the IgG1 and IgG4 levels were elevated.
