Introduction and Aim: Coronary arterydisease (CAD) is increased in diabetics (1). In addition to conventional risk factors,small dense LDL (d-LDL) that is more prevalent in diabetics is an important determinant of CAD (2). d-LDL has increased susceptibility to oxidation which explains its atherogenicity. Increased susceptibility could be due to its higher PUFA content (3). As there is limited information about fatty acids(FAs) of LDL subtypes in this study we compared LDL subtype FAs in diabetics & controls.
Materials & methods: FAs of LDL subtypes in 15 diabetics &15 controls aged 50 to 70 were determined. LDLsubtypes were isolated from plasma by ultracentrifugaion on discontinuous saltgradient(4).FA composition was determined following Folch extraction(5) ,methylesterification & analysis by GC(6).
Results: Total FA content of LDL subtypes in diabetics were significantly higher than controls (p < 0.05). Arachidonic acid was significantly higher in LDL3 compared to LDL1 & LDL2 in controls & LDL2 in diabetics (p < 0.05).
Conclusion: Higher arachidonic acid content of LDL3 subtype (d-LDL) in both groups may partly increase its susceptibility to oxidation & be a reason for its increased atherogenicity .
