hs-CRP is a sensitive acute phase reactant, expressed principally by the liver after stimulation with IL-6. In healthy population hs-CRP circulates at low concentrations in plasma ( < 3mg/L).
hs-CRP is a risk factor for the developement of cardiovascular complications, hospitalization, and finally, death of hemodialysed patients.
Using immunohystochemical methods, it has been established that the CPR molecule is present in fibrose plaques of atherosclerotic lesions.

We included 243 hemodyalised patients in our study. According to the cause of renal failure, they have been sorted in diabetic nephropaths group, cardiopaths group and the others. Based on the increasing values of hs-CRP concentrations, patients were divided into 4 quartiles. Concentration range in the first quartile was 0,45-2,17; 2,28-4,47 in the second; 4,58-9,86 in the third, and finally 10,25-31,18 mg/dL in the fourth quartile.
Statistically significant increase of cardiopaths has been established in fourth quartile, in comparison with lower concentrations of hs-CRP.
Results of this study represent additional confirmation of the exsisting hypotesis of notable predictive value of hs-CRP in assessing the probability of the developement of coronary disease in patients with end-phase renal disease.
Research of the connection of this parameter and survival is the subject of further investigations and the expansion of that topic.
