Some investigators reported an inverse correlation between angiogenic factors and apoptotic factors in gastric and lung carcinoma but any correlation was denied in breast carcinoma. So the aim of this work was to study whether or not apoptosis correlates with angiogenesis in acute leukemic patients. This study included 3 groups: Group I included 15 healthy persons of matched age and sex with the diseased groups and served as controls, group II included 15 patients having acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and group III included 15 patients having acute myeloblastic leukemia (AML). All patients were newly diagnosed. The followings were done to all patients and controls: Estimation of serum concentration of human total matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9), human tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1), plasma concentration of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF) and human sFas by ELISA technique as well as myeloperoxidase (MPO) in mononuclear layer. Results showed elevated levels of the angiogenic factors (MMP-9, TIMP-1 and HGF) as well as the apoptotic factor (sFas) in both acute leukemic groups as compared with controls while MPO was significantly lower in both groups as compared to controls. Significantly higher level of MMP-9 and MPO was present in AML than ALL group while sFas was significantly higher in ALL than AML group. HGF level was insignificantly differ between both groups. Higher values of all parameters were observed in M4 and M5 than other FAB subtypes and in adult than child ALL. No correlation was present between angiogenesis and apoptosis in acute leukemic patients. From this study, we concluded that angiogenesis and apoptosis are independent processes in acute leukemias.
