Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate plasma oxidant/antioxidant status in patient with malnutrition which is one of the causes of cancer in pediatric age group, and elucidate possible effects of malnutrition plasma oxidant status.
Methods: Fasting blood samples were obtain from 30 malnourished children and 13 healthy controls. The levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and AOP (Antioxidant Potential) were measured in the plasma from both patients and controls.
Results: The plasma TBARS levels in the patients group was higher than in the controls (p < 0.01). However, AOP values in the plasma from patients group was lower than in the controls (p < 0.05)
Summary and Conclusion: The results suggest that antioxidant potential is reduced due to impaired antioxidant system in plasma from malnourished patients and that oxidant stress causes significant peroxidation. Therefore, it has been suggested that antioxidant supplementation may give beneficial results for these patients.
